Bobcats trounce No. 21 Western Kentucky

It was just 8 days ago when the Lady Bobcats blew a 2-set lead to No. 24 North Carolina and were handed their first loss of the 2013 campaign.

After a tough loss like that, it can be hard to rebound. But Ohio (7-1) has been able to do just that as they took care of Dayton in straight sets the next day, and also in straight sets put away UNLV in their opener in the WKU Invitational.

Continuing to ride their hot streak, the Lady Bobcats were able to top the hosts of the tournament, the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (6-4) in three games (25-21, 25-23, 25-23).

Western Kentucky was coming in cold. After starting the season 3-1, the Hilltoppers lost 2 of 3 in the Seminole Invitational but did rebound with a 3-0 win over Cincinnati on Tuesday.

Ohio started slow in the first set, falling behind 4-1 early. But after 3 kills by Abby Gilleland the Bobcats soon came back to even things up at 11 a piece. The set went back and forth, but after 3 consecutive kills by Katie Horton, Liis Kullerkann and Alexis Pinson, the Bobcats ended the game on a 5-0 run to take the first set 25-21.

The 2nd set was more of the same, going back and forth between the 2 teams, until an 8-3 Bobcat run broke the game open to a 17-11 score led by kills by Horton and Kullerkann and 2 attack errors by WKU.

After a time out, the Hilltoppers finished the set on a 12-8 run, but it wasn’t enough. Alexis Pinson’s 3rd kill of the match gave Ohio the 2nd set by a 25-23 score.

The Lady Bobcats were 1 set away from their seventh win of the season. But being in this spot up 2-0 isn’t always a guaranteed win, as they found out against North Carolina. Western Kentucky came out looking sharp facing elimination in the 3rd set, starting with a 7-3 lead with 2 kills by Heather Boyan and later extending that lead to 12-8.

After Coach Theis burned a time out, the Bobcats recovered, going on a 10-6 run to tie the 3rd set 18-18. After exchanging points up until a 22-22 standstill, Ohio ended the 3rd set on a 3-1 run with kills by Abby Gilleland and Katie Horton to move the Bobcats to their 7th win of the season.

In a losing effort, the Hilltoppers were led by Noelle Langenkamp who led WKU going 12/22 in kills with for a .455 kill percentage, and Heather Boyan who tallied 11 kills on 24 attempts for a .458 kill percentage that led the team. Ashley Potts also led WKU in digs with 24.

In their 7th win of the season the Lady Bobcats were led by, Kelly Lamberti who led the Bobcats with 13 kills in 32 attempts and a team leading .312 kill percentage. Katie Horton also contributed with solid offense, going 10/28 in kills with a .286 kill percentage.

Meredith Ashy led the Bobcats in their win with 16 digs. Mallory Salis, Lamberti, and Brooke Coleman all put in solid work with 10 digs a piece.

For WKU, it will be a match later tonight against the UNLV Running Rebels (4-4) who also just lost to Ohio in straight sets on Friday and had a match up with Virginia earlier today.

For Ohio, after their 2nd straight win against a ranked opponent, will face off against the 4-3 Virginia Cavaliers who have lost 3 of their last 4 matches after starting the season 3-0.
