The Bobcats came into Saturday’s match against No. 10 Michigan riding a 6-game win streak after winning both games yesterday against Maryland and Marshall.
Michigan came it with a win streak of their own, also scoring victories against Maryland and Marshall yesterday and looking to go a perfect 3-0 as hosts of the Invitational.
Michigan pulled out a close win against No. 24 Ohio in 5 sets (25-18, 22-25, 25-15, 23-25, 15-11) as they improved their record to 10-1 overall and 2-1 against ranked opponents.
Michigan started strong, opening to an 8-3 lead with a pair of kills by Molly Toon and 3 kills by Jennifer Cross.
Cross and Toon each had a kill as Michigan ended the first set on a 5-0 run to take the first game 25-18.
OU responded with a strong second set. Their scoring was diverse as 7 different Bobcats chimed in with kills as Kelly Lamberti and Liis Kullerkann each had four in a 25-22 2nd set win to even the match at 1-1.
Michigan played well in set three with an 11-2 run with help from Molly Toon and Jennifer Cross. Wach had a pair of kills to break a 10-10 tie , and Michigan would dominate the set in a 25-15 set win.
However, the Wolverines weren’t able to put away the Bobcats as Kelly Lamberti racked up 7 kills in a 25-23 set win to extend the match to a fifth and final set.
The fifth game went back and forth but ultimately went Michigan’s way as Krystaln Goode racked up 3 kills and led Michigan to their 10th win and gave OU their 2nd loss.
For Ohio, this is just their 2nd loss of the season (two weeks ago vs. North Carolina) both of them coming against ranked opponents.
For Michigan, they continued their dominance as they finished off a perfect 3-0 record in the invitational.
The Bobcats were led offensively by Kelly Lamberti who led the team with 21 kills and a .308 kill percentage. Liis Kullerkann and Katie Horton also had good games with 10 kills each.
Defensively, the Bobcats were led by Abby Gilleland with 18 digs, Meredith Ashy and Kelly Lamberti also had good defensive games as Ashy racked up 16 digs and Lamberti with 15.
Michigan was led offensively by a number of players as the Wolverines had 4 players with double digit kills (Cross-18, Toon-15, Erwin-13,Goode-13). Leading the Wolverines in defense was Tiffany Morales who had 22 digs, Lexi Erwin also had 17 digs.
Next for No. 24 Ohio will be a tough matchup in Buffalo (12-1) on Friday.
