Bobcats dominate Zips in three straight sets

After beating Buffalo in their MAC season opener, No. 22 Ohio finished opening MAC weekend play with a win over the Akron Zips, sweeping them in three sets.

The Bobcats started hot, grabbing an early 3-1 lead and holding on to it for the rest of first set. The Zips got as close as 12-8 before the Cats widened their lead, scoring 10 of the next 14 points. They kept the pressure on the Zips finishing out the first set with a 25-12 victory, ending on a 13-4 run.

The Bobcats had five service aces and nine kills in the set, including three kills from Kelly Lamberti.

The second set saw the Zips jump out to an early 4-0 lead, but that didn’t phase the Bobcats. They went on a 7-2 run and eventually took an 11-7 lead before Akron was forced to call a timeout. Like the first set, the Bobcats didn’t let the Zips get close again. They opened up a 20-10 lead and took the second set by a score of 25-12.

The Bobcats had 14 kills in the second set to the Zips six. Alexis Pinson had four kills and three aces of her own. The Zips also committed five errors in the second set.

In the third set, the Bobcats never trailed the Zips, having leads of 10-5, 11-7 and 13-8. The Zips showed some fight however, closing the gap to 14-12. Two kills from Mary Delich and two Bobcats errors helped fuel the rally for the Zips.

Akron kept hanging, and even got within one point at 18-17. The Bobcats held their ground however, finishing the set and the match with a 25-22 victory and sweeping the Zips.

Ohio had 42 kills to Akron’s 29, and had eight service aces to the Zips’ one.

Delich and Kelsey Wilson led the Zips with nine kills apiece, but they weren’t enough to take down the Bobcats. Akron now falls to 0-2 in the MAC with a 6-7 overall record.

The Bobcats improve to 12-2 and stay perfect in the MAC with a 2-0 record.

Ohio will return home next weekend when they take on the Miami RedHawks Friday night at 7 pm at the Convocation Center.
