The Ohio women’s soccer team fell Sunday, 2-1 at Northern Illinois. However, the Bobcats clinched a berth in the eight-team MAC tournament field.
After a scoreless first half, Northern Illinois gained a 2-0 lead with goals by Samantha Hill (Sr.) in the 63rd minute and Sara Spaulding (Soph.) in the 80th minute. Ohio responded with an 83rd minute goal by Carly Manso (Fr.).
“We’re very disappointed,” said head coach Aaron Rodgers. “We knew what was ahead of us, and I feel like we were prepared… There were periods of the game where we were very good, and we moved the ball very well and created a good rhythm. We just weren’t able to sustain that for long enough periods of time.”
The game was a defensive battle throughout as there were just 11 total shots from the two teams combined.
Bobcat goalkeeper Mattie Liston (Sr.) totaled 3 saves in the match, raising her career saves to 394, which ranks 5th all-time in the Mid-American Conference.
Sunday’s loss was the Bobcats’ last road game of the season. The Ohio regular season concludes on Thursday, the 31st, at Chessa Field at 3pm against Kent State. An Ohio win and a NIU loss would clinch a No. 7 seed for the ‘Cats in the MAC tournament.
