Bobcats advance to MAC Championship with win over NIU

The No. 1 seeded Ohio Bobcats are headed to the MAC Championship, as they defeated Northern Illinois on Saturday in three straight sets (25-22, 25-22, 25-23).

The Green and White continued their hot play as this sweep of the No. 5 seeded Huskies. The win marked their fourth straight sweep and their 10th consecutive win of the season.

No sets came easy for Ohio in this game, as Kelly Lamberti’s kill gave the Green and White their biggest lead of the set at 18-13. NIU came back, however, as they tallied six of the next seven points to tie the set at 19. Ohio was able to rally a 4-0 run that set up Alexis Pinson’s set winning kill to put Ohio up 1-0.

Ohio once again got the early lead in the second set leading 9-3. Ohio kept their close lead as they pulled out to a five-point lead at 24-19. NIU’s 4-0 run cut the Ohio lead to one, but the Green and White rallied off the last 2 points as Karin Bull’s kill put Ohio up 2-0 going into the half.

NIU came out with a strong start in the third set going up 8-3. Four 3-0 runs and a 5-0 run by Ohio set up their comeback as they got their first lead of the set at 23-22. Following a timeout by NIU, Kelly Lamberti’s kill gave the Bobcats the win and a punched ticket to the MAC Championship game.

Starting with defense, Brooke Coleman and Meredith Ashy combined for 30 total kills.

Offensively, Karin Bull and Katie Horton each led the Green and White with 10 each. Kelly Lamberti also had a good game with eight. Ohio won the game despite just .182 kill percentage. Abby Gilleland once again had a great game in the assist category as she tallied 34 of Ohio’s 40.

Ohio will now chase after it’s eighth MAC Volleyball Championship as they will face off with Eastern Michigan tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
