Many students go into college undecided on what they want to major in. It’s completely normal and acceptable. I have a unique plan for my future and there isn’t really a distinguished major that would suit my plans. I want to own a Gymnastics and Dance Club and also be the head coach of the gym (more so of the coaching aspect). Now, I could major in Recreational Management and get the knowledge I would need to open the gym, but it wouldn’t necessarily give me the coaching knowledge I would need. So, I’m right back at the beginning of not knowing what to major in.
My first bit of advice is to get experience in whatever you can get your hands on! Try different jobs or internships and maybe you’ll fall in love with doing something you never even thought you’d like. You never know until you try. I have been coaching gymnastics for four years and I’ve loved it, but I’ve also had a job in food services here on campus—that only lasted three weeks, but I still tried it! Once you find something you like, stick with it and try to find out more about it.
Additionally, try taking random classes that simply sound intriguing. You may take Fundamentals of Public Speaking and find out that you’re really good at giving speeches in front of a crowd! Then you may take more COMS classes and finally decide that you want to declare yourself as a Communication Major! As I said before, you never know until you try. So, I challenge you to step out of your comfort zone and apply at a random job on or off campus; or maybe just take a class that simply sounds interesting!

I constantly question what I want to do for the rest of my life, but I always end up in the same place – Coaching gymnastics is my passion and I couldn’t see myself doing anything else. Someone once told me, “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.”
