Proceeds from the event will aid the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The fest will be hosted at 28 Smith St. at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Folk Fest will have a variety of artists from rock to folk to DJs.
While in high school in suburban Columbus, Haden DeRoberts started Folk Fest with friends in his parent’s backyard as an open invitation jam session. This impromptu show was a triumph, performing better than DeRoberts had originally hoped.
“So many people came out to it; we were taken back by how many people showed up. We decided to grow it,” DeRoberts said.
He held several more fests in Columbus, sometimes two a year, until he got a place off campus to host it in Athens.
During his freshman year at Ohio University, DeRoberts was diagnosed with leukemia. While his illness forced him out of school temporarily, Folk Fest continued through his treatment.
“I organized the sixth Folk Fest from my hospital room. I got out of the hospital, and it was the weekend after I finished treatment,” DeRoberts said.
His life was saved with a vital bone marrow transplant received from an anonymous donor. As a result, DeRoberts wishes to give back and help others receive bone barrow transplants.
Volunteers from Hillel and Love Hope Strength will be operating a booth where fest-goers may register in the National Bone Marrow Registry. The process is quick and painless. By signing up, a registrant can potentially save a life.
Here are a few of the bands that’ll be taking the stage on Saturday.
The She Bears are a four-piece indie rock band hailing from Columbus with roots in Athens. They’re a high-energy group with a sluggish pop feel, described by the band as “slacker pop.” The She Bears are not new to the stage either; they’ve been together for six years.
Sotto Voce is a singer-songwriter from Pittsburgh, who has a mellow vibe.
Fine Animals are an electronically-influenced indie rock band from Columbus that sound similar to bigger acts like alt-J and Pinback. However, for their performance on Saturday, the band is playing an acoustic set of their music.
Playing to Vapors
Although Playing to Vapors doesn’t have much of a history, they’ve released one full EP and several singles and have developed a sound of their own. Their EP “Identities” strides the line between psychedelic and indie rock while being reinforced by solid rhythmic guitar.
Blond is a local band that sounds like a mixture of psychedelic and indie rock. They sound like a 60s rock band redone for the modern indie scene, which makes for a smooth listen.
