After a forgetful four-game road trip, Ohio was able to get back in the win column by defeating Ball State, 5-3.
Ohio got on the board quickly, scoring two goals in the first ten minutes of the game. Both goals were scored off corners, with the first coming from senior Lauryl Desch three minutes into the game, and then the second one coming from Adele Sammons.
Ball State (5-9, 1-3 MAC) would come back to tie it late in the first half, scoring three straight goals in a 10-minute span.
After being dominated by Ball State for the latter part of the first half, Ohio was given a corner with the half coming to an end. Desch appeared to score off the corner, but the officials ruled that the goal was not a goal. After some discussion between both officials, the call was overturned and the goal was allowed.
Ohio (3-8, 2-2 MAC) was impressive on its corners today. Of the seven corners it took, Ohio scored five times.
“We’ve been working on our corners (this week), and we’ve identified something we wanted to put in and we ran it over and over again today, ” Ohio coach Neil Macmillan said.
With the momentum on their side, the Bobcats were able to take the lead on Sammons’ second goal of the game. Desch would later complete the hat trick, scoring her third goal of the game to give Ohio a 5-3 lead with 10 minutes remaining. From there, Ohio would cruise to the finish line and capture its third win of the season
Desch’s hat trick today has given her five goals in her last two games. Her five goals and six points for the season lead all Bobcat players.
“We got together, refocused and determined what we wanted to do as a team, which was getting to the MAC tournament, and we can do that by scoring goals,” Desch said.
Ohio’s next game will be at home on Tuesday against Louisville.
