HallOUween is right around the corner. If you’re dressing up, the time to make or buy your costume is quickly approaching. Buying your outfit can be really expensive, especially if you and your friends are all broke college students; making a costume is a much better idea. From corny to popular culture references, below are great ideas for group costumes that you can make yourself.
1. Four seasons
This costume is easy and can be changed up to fit any gender. Start with shirts or dresses in colors of the season—green for spring, yellow for summer, red or brown for fall, and blue or white for winter—and glue fake leaves, flowers, or snowflakes to them depending on which season you are. Wear footwear that matches the season, and you’ve got a creative costume with minimal effort.
2. Terrible prom group
Hit up a local thrift store or re-purpose some dresses in your closet. Guys can wear ugly dress shirts, suspenders and ill-fitting shorts or pants. Glue things like sequins, feathers, fake flowers, ribbons and whatever else you find on clearance at the craft store wherever you think they should go. Apply makeup terribly, and make boutonnieres and corsages for a complete look.
The minion costume can be used no matter how many people are in the group. Get yellow t-shirts, and draw Gru’s logo on them. Then wear yellow leggings and overalls (or jean shorts with suspenders), an optional black construction hat and some big glasses to complete the ensemble.
With a group of friends, pick one friend to wear a white dress with a pink sash and have everyone else wear dresses that are similar shades of pink. If you want to go all out, have everyone carry small bouquets of fake flowers.
5. Duck Dynasty
Match camo shirts with camo pants and camo headbands. American flag headbands or camouflage hats will do in a pinch. Wear fake beards—or make them out of cotton balls—and you’re set.
6. The Wizard of Oz
This idea works perfectly for a group of four. Get a blue gingham dress with a white shirt for Dorothy, silver face paint with gray clothes for the Tin Man, patched clothes and a simple hat for the Scarecrow, and yellow clothes with a mane made out of felt or fake fur for the Cowardly Lion. You should probably leave any furry friends at home, though. HallOUween gets crazy, and Toto is no match for thousands of intoxicated partiers.
7. Rock, paper, scissors
Many people love a good round of rock, paper, scissors (unless you lose, of course). This costume is really easy to make. The more ambitious member of the group can use silver duct tape on their pants and shirt to make the blades and the handle. Draw on cheap white sweatshirts and sweatpants with permanent markers to look like paper. Finally, the rock requires little to no effort—just wear the same color on top and bottom and occasionally curl into a small ball.
Dominoes are perhaps the simplest idea on this list; these costumes can be made for individuals as well as huge groups. Just wear black on top and bottom, and tape some white circles on your clothes in the pattern of a domino.
Match your shirt with your pants, and then fold construction paper into a cone to wear on your head. Get some puffy paint to write “Crayola” on your clothes. A crayon box can be made if you want, but isn’t necessary.
