Volleyball: Ohio tops Bowling Green, earns MAC title

The Ohio Bobcats rolled over the Bowling Green Falcons on Friday to extend their winning streak to 16 games and remain undefeated in MAC play.

With the 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-14) win, Ohio clinched its second straight MAC championship, as well as the No. 1 seed in the upcoming MAC Tournament.

In the first set, Ohio (22-4, 15-0 MAC) build an early 8-5 lead, but a 5-1 Falcons run gave them an early 10-9 advantage. Ohio responded with a 5-1 run of its own to take a lead it would not surrender. Kelly Lamberti and Karin Bull had the final two kills for the Bobcats to give them a 1-0 set lead.

Bowling Green (7-20, 4-11 MAC) had an impressive 9-2 run early in the second set and took a 16-11 lead. Ohio would answer the Falcon momentum, going on an incredible 13-2 run to retake the lead. Karin Bull would finish off the second straight set, giving Ohio the 2-0 lead going into the break.

Ohio dominated the third set, taking an early lead and never letting go. The Green and White had runs of 6-0 and 5-0 to complete control the set, winning 25-24, and 3-0 overall.

In the win, Bull and Lamberti each had double-digit kills, with Bull finishing with 13 and Lamberti with 10. Three different Bobcats finished with double-digit digs, with Abby Gilleland leading the team with 12.

In a losing effort, Bowling Green’s Jelena Sunjic led the team in kills with eight. Madeline Garda also had 25 digs for the Falcons.

“I’m a very excited player and I get fired up about my kills and other peoples’ kills, too,” Mallory Salis said. “You gotta be loud and earn the right to celebrate.”

“We got a lot of momentum and I hope we can get this thing rolling through the tournament,” Ohio coach Deane Webb said.
