When the 13Fest lineup dropped a few months ago, so did the jaws of thousands of EDM fans when they saw Diplo at the top of the list.
Just three or four years ago, the reaction might have been a collective head scratch or a “Oh dude f*** that.”
Oh, how things have changed.
Today, Diplo, whose real name is Thomas Pentz, stands as an EDM legend and pop culture phenom. His fingerprints are all over chart-topping EDM songs, and his social life is all over the tabloids.
But before his astronomic rise in the industry, Diplo started out simple. He worked his way up DJing clubs, diligently putting out mixtape after mixtape, establishing a decent footing within the scene.
Things changed when he met (and began to date) M.I.A. in 2004. Diplo and London-based DJ Switch combined to produce M.I.A.’s 2007 mega-hit “Paper Planes.”
Since then, Diplo’s production credits include: Snoop Dogg, Chris Brown, Justin Bieber and Iggy Azalea.
Diplo’s so big that the track “Biggie Bounce” is on a series of Fiat commercials I’m sure everyone is sick of by now.
This year, Diplo and fellow producer Skrillex (you may have heard of him) combined to form Jack Ü, a damn powerful combination that meshes their eclectic styles.
On top of producing pop and hip-hop hits, topping the charts with his own work, and collaborating with every DJ and his mother, Diplo also has a BBC1 Radio station appropriately dubbed “Diplo and Friends.” The station has been a launching pad for many aspiring producers and is a must listen for EDM-heads.
The set time of Diplo’s set for 13Fest, 6:30- 7:50 PM, is questionable at best for the headliner of a Fest that goes until 11:00 PM. Regardless, for many festgoers, Diplo IS 13Fest and set time doesn’t mean shit.
My hope is that he will put on a festival-caliber show for us college kids. Knowing Diplo’s propensity for twerking, drunkenness, and all-around debauchery, I think we’re in for a good time.
That’s it for #Fest Previews! Now on to the real fun. Remember to be safe, Bobcats and out-of-towners alike!
