The influx of “Ohio University Dad” shirts walking through Court Street bars and restaurants packed with middle aged individuals can mean only one thing: Dad’s weekend is here. The university has lined up a weekend full of events for visiting fathers.
Friday’s entertainment options include an Anointed Ministries concert in the Baker University Center Ballroom at 6 p.m. featuring choir voices, dancing and spoken word poetry. Also in Baker Center Theater at 6 p.m. will be a performance of “The Nerd,” a comedic play put on by the Ohio University student theater troupe The Lost Flamingo Company. For those looking to showcase their own talents, The Front Room Coffee House will welcome guests from 6-8 p.m. on Friday for an open stage opportunity. Friday night also offers an opportunity for students and fathers to watch Ohio hockey take on Drexel University at 7:30 p.m. in Bird Arena. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students.
For some outdoor enjoyment, OU Outdoor pursuits will be hosting a campfire, hiking, stargazing and s’mores event at The Ridges at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evening. Tickets are $10 per person and include the cost for transportation and staff guidance.
Saturday will offer an equally robust list of activities. The morning will commence with the third annual Alden Open, a mini-golf event held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Alden Library. Tickets are $5 for nine holes, and $10 for the full 18. According to the library’s website, “All proceeds will go toward the annual Ohio University Student Research and Creative Activity Expo,” which allows an eclectic group of students to showcase their creativity through film, performances, posters, exhibits and more. In the afternoon, the Student Alumni Board will host a Chili Cook-Off from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Konneker Alumni Center Lawn. Tickets are $5 and include samples and voting of the top chili recipes made by SAB dads. The proceeds will go to Ronald McDonald House of Central Ohio in support of Bobcathon. For those wishing to support the Bobcat sports teams, there will be another Ohio vs. Drexel hockey game at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday evening. Before the game, Walter Hall Rotunda will be hosting “Pops and Pucks”, an event opportunity providing burgers, tailgate food and entertainment. Tickets are $10, and the event will be open from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The convocation center is offering a three game package deal for Saturday that includes tickets to see the Women’s Basketball team vs. Wilmington at 11:30 a.m., the Men’s Basketball team vs. Indiana Tech at 2 p.m. and Women’s Volleyball vs. Central Michigan at 7 p.m, all for the price of one.
Have a laugh on Saturday evening when comedians Jordan Klepper and John Hodgman from the Daily Show Live perform at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium at 8 p.m. Tickets range from $20 to $40 and can be purchased through the university website.
There are several options accommodating for those who need a place to stay for the weekend. Dads can reserve a standard double or single room for both Friday and Saturday on campus at the Fenzel House, located at 122 South Green Drive. Standard double rooms cost $246.34, while single rooms cost $151.42. Each include twin sized beds, a refrigerator/microwave and a shared bathroom with other guests. Additional places to stay such as local B&Bs, cabins and hotels are listed through the Athens County Ohio website.
