On the heels of winning their 20th game of the season last Friday, the Ohio Bobcats (21-10) were not phased by their five-day break, defeating Northern Illinois (21-12) in the first round of the MAC tournament on Thursday at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, OH, 79-62.
The number-two seeded Bobcats picked up win number 21 in dominating fashion, keeping the pedal down on the seven-seeded Huskies.
Gavin Block nailed a three with just over 13 minutes left in the first half to put Ohio up, 17-16, a lead they would hold onto for the remainder of the game.
The Bobcats extended their lead by as much as 24 points before cruising to a 17-point win.
The ‘Cats were led by MAC Player of the Year Antonio Campbell, who finished the game with a team-high 21 points and eight rebounds on 10 of 17 shooting.
In total, five Bobcats tallied double-figures, helping the team avenge their 80-69 loss to the Huskies back on January 6th.
As a team, Ohio shot an incredible 48.3 percent from beyond the arc, with forward Kenny Kaminski knocking down five three-pointers in route to a 17-point performance.
Northern Illinois shooting guard Marshawn Wilson led all scorers with 22 points.
The Bobcats do not have much time to celebrate their opening-round victory with a semifinal affair with number-three seeded Buffalo (18-14) on tap for tonight at the same venue in Northern Ohio.
The ‘Cats completed a clean sweep of the Bulls in the regular season with a thrilling 103-96 overtime win on March 1st and a 94-75 victory at Buffalo in their first meeting on February 12th.
