“La La Land” seems to be on a rocket ship headed straight toward a Best Picture Oscar nomination, receiving nothing less than excellent reviews from the few who have seen the film.
The film, which will not see a wide release until December 16, 2016, stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as two artists in love, struggling to make it in Los Angeles. As Gosling (a jazz pianist) and Stone (an actress) begin to see more and more success in their careers, their relationship becomes strained.
Aside from the phenomenal cast which includes J.K. Simmons, the film’s director is Damien Chazelle who is best known for writing and directing the 2014 hit “Whiplash,” which garnered a Best Supporting Actor win at the Oscars for Simmons.
Today, a new trailer was released for the romantic dramedy musical that showcased some of the phenomenal music and gorgeous set pieces that the film will offer.
Unfortunately this trailer will have to hold us over until “La La Land” opens next month. The music, the setting and the tribute to old Hollywood that the film promises to give audiences is exciting, and are just some of the reasons why the film has received overwhelmingly positive reviews thus far.
Additionally, an original musical being released in theaters is a very rare thing. When people think of musicals turned into movies they most likely think of 2012’s “Les Misérables,” which was a pretty well established property before reaching movie theaters. In”La La Land,” audiences will experience an original score and story come alive on the big screen.
So for all you musical fans at Ohio University, it seems like this is a film that you will want to see once it makes its way to The Athena.
