Speakeasy Weekly Celebration Series Oct. 6—Oct. 12

Sunday, Oct. 6—GradeAUnderA’s Birthday

GradeAUnderA was a successful YouTuber several years ago. “Was” being the important word here because he has been known to take massive hiatuses on uploading videos due to him having problems with depression. His fanbase still regularly checks his channel to see if he has uploaded, despite having only six uploads since Mar. 12, 2017. The fanbase loyalty is impressive, and hopefully, they will be rewarded with new content for it.

Monday, Oct. 7—World Habitat Day

Being able to have a home is one of those things that seem natural to life, but for many around the world, that is not a reality. A lot of factors can lead to homelessness, such as poverty and war. These problems need to be addressed, and that is why the United Nations has declared  the first Monday of October as World Habitat Day. According to un.org, the day was made “to reflect on the state of our towns and cities, and on the basic right of all to adequate shelter”.

Tuesday, Oct 8—Draconid Meteor Shower

If anyone wants to make a wish on a shooting star, this would be the night to try it. The annual meteor shower is also going on Oct. 7, and Oct. 9, but Oct. 8 is likely the best night to see the shower. The show can be very unpredictable, so it may not bring many meteors into vision. Every once in a while, though, the calmness ceases and hundreds of meteors are visible throughout the night.

Wednesday, Oct. 9—Fire Prevention Day

On Oct. 8, 1871, a cow allegedly knocked over a lit lantern. What does that have to do with anything? Well, that apparently was the source of a fire that caused over $200,000,000 in damages and killed hundreds of people. The Great Chicago Fire was such a terrible memory for Americans, it was still a relevant reason why president Calvin Coolidge proposed Fire Prevention Week over 50 years after the incident. The week will always happen the week of Oct. 9th Fire Prevention Day.

Thursday, Oct. 10—National Depression Screening Day

On the Thursday of the first full week of October, community groups all across the country will be having free depression screenings. The screenings will help people learn if they suffer from the mental illness. Knowledge of self is important when trying to figure out how to solve a problem. This year, the date lines up with World Mental Health Day.

Friday, Oct 11—Cardi B’s Birthday

The rapping industry is dominated by males. However, there are a handful of females who have been very successful with this style of music. With the album Invasion of Privacy in 2018, Cardi B became the first woman to win a Grammy award for best album as a solo artist. This was her debut studio album, and she is only 26 years old. Safe to say she has a long and illustrious career ahead of her.

Saturday, Oct. 1—International African Penguin Awareness Day

Any species declared endangered needs to be monitored and made aware of by the general public. Thanks to oil spills and commercial fishing in the region, the African Penguin has been having trouble finding food and their numbers are dropping because of it. If nothing is done, this flightless bird may go extinct. Thankfully, nobody wants to see that happen. Especially the organization the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds, which rescues and rehabilitates birds all around the ocean. More info to help them can be found at their website https://sanccob.co.za/.
