In a previous article, I discussed the different DIY costumes that were “trending” for this year. While many people love to make their own costumes, many also like to buy one. With this in mind, I thought it would be fun to go through Spirit Halloween and see the “2019’s Fan Favorite Halloween Costumes”.
At number 10, it is shockingly Colonel Sanders from KFC. You are probably wondering why, and I am asking the same question. The picture should speak for itself.
Number 9 should not come as a shock because Dwight Schrute is a popular character on the show The Office. It has been 7 years since the show ended and Dwight is somehow present in everyday activities. This makes people still want to dress up as him even as the generations change.
Archie from Riverdale earns spot number 8. Upon the release of the show, Rotten Tomatoes gave Season 1 an 86% rating. As of the end of Season 3, Rotten Tomatoes has since given it a rating of 74%. So the fact that it is listed in the Top 10, comes as a shock to me.
I had to do a little bit of research to figure out what the number 7 costume is. Coming from a popular role-playing video game, Kingdom Hearts is King Sora. This game was released in January of this year, making it still very recent and new.
I was beginning to wonder when a Stranger Things costume was going to show up. Low and behold at number 6, Eleven from Stranger Things Season 3. Since it was released in July of this year, it is still a very popular idea. It is also easy to obtain and people will love the reference.
Just when I thought this list was getting good, number 5 appeared. It is a Mommy Shark costume. The “Baby Shark” song gained a lot of popularity this year as new remixes came out. Again, the reference is pretty self-explanatory.
Number 4 is a very popular anime character, Ichigo Kurosaki from the Bleach Series. The Bleach Series is a Japanese animated show in which the main character has the ability to see ghosts. He uses this ability to protect and help tortured spirits. Every year, anime’s popularity increases so it comes as no shock that an anime character would be high on the list.
Number 3 is the slasher from the popular horror movie, Trick ‘R Treat. If you are unaware of what Trick ‘R Treat (2007) is about, then buckle up. It is about how stories of traditions, ghosts and goblins are interwoven on one Halloween night. Some of the stories lead to tales of extinguishing a Jack-o-Lantern before midnight and seeing the sinister trick-or-treater. The reason it is popular again in 2019 may be caused by the second movie supposedly coming out this year. Long story short, any horror movie character is a great costume idea because the whole idea of Halloween is scary and evil so it perfectly matches up.
At number 2 is a lady GhostBuster from Ghostbusters. The remastered movie was released in 2016, 32 years after the first movie was released. While the Ghostbuster costume was popular before the new movie, its release added to the popularity. It informed a new generation of people who ghostbusters were and why everyone was referencing them.
Finally, at number 1 is Winnie Sanderson from Hocus Pocus. Arguably the most popular Halloween movie, going as Winnie will get noticed and complimented. If you want to get even more compliments I suggest getting two friends to complete the trio by being Sarah and Mary. Maybe even performing, “I Put a Spell on You”. Either way it is always a crowd pleaser.
Until tomorrow, have a spooky day!
